BU Computer Emergency Response Team

Research partnership with Bournemouth University’s cyber security team, shaping the science behind our training.

BU Computer Emergency Response Team (BU-CERT) provides threat intelligence to the university community. Our analyst team reviews and prioritises threat information, and communicates their findings to BU employees and students through security announcements and advisories.

Services include alerts and warnings, incident handling, development and maintenance of security tools, awareness building, and education and training.

BU-CERT is the result of a collaboration between Bournemouth University’s IT Services, the Department of Computing and Informatics, and the Department of Psychology. BU IT Services manage the operational side of BU-CERT, handling incidents, vulnerabilities, assessments, and alerts.

The Department of Computing and Informatics supports BU-CERT through research in incident response, malware analysis, and threat intelligence. This work draws on expertise in data science, human-computer interaction, social informatics, and security education.

The Department of Psychology studies human behaviour related to cybersecurity, including risk perception, trust, social engineering, and hacker motivations. This research helps BU-CERT understand how threats can be prevented or mitigated and how people can be educated to reduce the impact of cyber attacks.
